  • The answer lies in organisation. Life follows a clear hierarchy - from the tiniest cell to the complete organism. Understanding this hierarchy is crucial for GCSE Biology because it explains how structure relates to function at every level.
  • The basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms. All cells contain genetic material and can carry out the seven life processes.
  • Trap: Many students think cells are just 'bags of stuff'. Actually, cells are highly organised with specific structures (organelles) that perform different jobs - just like organs in your body.

  • Think of muscle tissue in your arm. Thousands of muscle cells work together, all with the same job: contract when stimulated. Each cell is specialised for this function - they're long, contain lots of protein fibres, and can change length rapidly.
  • Tissues are powerful, but they need support. Your heart muscle tissue can contract, but it needs blood vessels to supply oxygen and nerves to control the rhythm. This is where organs come in.
  • A structure made of different tissues working together to perform a particular function. Each organ contains multiple tissue types that support its main function.
  • Take your stomach as an example. It contains muscle tissue (to churn food), glandular tissue (to produce acid and enzymes), epithelial tissue (to line the stomach), and nervous tissue (to coordinate everything). Each tissue type has a different job, but they all work together for one purpose: digesting food.
