Why do cacti dominate deserts but die in rainforests? Why do polar bears live in the Arctic but not the Sahara? The answer lies in abiotic factors - the non-living conditions that make or break survival.
Every organism has a tolerance range for each environmental condition. Step outside that range, and populations crash. Stay within it, and communities flourish. Understanding these invisible controllers helps us predict how ecosystems respond to change.
Non-living environmental conditions that affect the distribution and abundance of organisms in a community. Include temperature, light, moisture, pH, oxygen levels, and carbon dioxide concentration.
Trap: Many students think abiotic means 'dead things like rocks'. Actually, abiotic factors are conditions and processes - temperature, light intensity, rainfall - not objects.
Six key abiotic factors control community structure. Each acts like a filter - organisms either cope with the conditions or they don't survive to reproduce.
Temperature affects enzyme activity and metabolic rate. Too hot and proteins denature. Too cold and reactions slow to a crawl. Most organisms have narrow temperature tolerance ranges.
Light intensity drives photosynthesis in plants and affects animal behaviour. Forest floors receive 1% of canopy light - only shade-tolerant species survive there.
Moisture levels determine water availability. Desert plants need water storage adaptations. Aquatic organisms need dissolved oxygen levels above critical thresholds.
pH levels affect enzyme function and nutrient availability. Most organisms tolerate pH 6-8. Acid rain (pH 4) devastates aquatic communities by disrupting cellular processes.
Carbon dioxide concentration limits photosynthesis rates. Higher CO₂ can boost plant growth, but also increases ocean acidity, harming shell-forming organisms.
