Picture this: in 1800, there were about 1 billion people on Earth. Today? Over 8 billion. That's not just more mouths to feed — it's more cars, more factories, more plastic bottles, and more waste than our planet has ever seen.
But here's the real kicker: it's not just about numbers. As countries develop, people want better lives — bigger houses, more gadgets, meat instead of vegetables. This means each person uses far more resources than their great-grandparents ever did.
The level of wealth, comfort and material goods available to a person or community. Higher standards require more resources per person.
Think about your daily life: smartphone (rare metals), clothes (cotton, synthetic fibres), food (farming, transport), heating (fossil fuels). Multiply that by 8 billion people, and you start to see the scale of the problem.
All this human activity creates waste. When that waste isn't handled properly, it becomes pollution — and pollution is an ecosystem killer.
Let's break down the main types of pollution and where they come from:
Air pollution: Car exhausts pump out carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Power stations burning coal release sulfur dioxide. Factories add their own cocktail of toxic gases. All of this creates smog that chokes both humans and wildlife.

Here's where it gets serious for ecosystems. Pollution doesn't just make the environment 'a bit dirty' — it actively kills plants and animals, which crashes biodiversity.
