1. Why Your Body Reacts Before You Think
Touch a hot surface and your hand jerks away before you even feel the pain. Step on a sharp object and your foot lifts instantly. These lightning-fast responses happen without any conscious thought - your spinal cord handles them automatically.
This is your body's emergency response system in action. While your brain processes information and makes decisions, reflex actions bypass this slower route entirely. They're hardwired shortcuts that can save you from serious injury.
An automatic and rapid response to a stimulus that does not involve the conscious part of the brain. These responses are involuntary and happen within milliseconds.
Trap: Many students think reflexes are just 'fast reactions'. Actually, reflexes are fundamentally different - they completely bypass conscious thought. You can't decide whether to have a reflex or not.
The complete pathway taken by nerve impulses during a reflex action. It consists of five components: receptor → sensory neurone → relay neurone → motor neurone → effector.
Think of the reflex arc as a relay race where the baton (nerve impulse) passes through each runner (neurone) in sequence. Each component has a specific job, and missing any one breaks the whole system.
Picture the reflex arc as a motorway with five key stops. Each stop has a specific function, and the 'traffic' (nerve impulses) must visit them in the correct order.
The microscopic gap between two neurones where nerve impulses are transmitted using chemical messengers called neurotransmitters.
Synapses are like toll booths on the reflex motorway. The electrical impulse can't jump across the gap, so it triggers the release of chemicals that carry the message to the next neurone. This takes time - about 0.5 milliseconds per synapse.
