Six major endocrine glands act as your body's hormone factories, each positioned strategically to monitor and control different body systems. Knowing their locations isn't just anatomy - it's understanding how your body maintains balance.
A pea-sized gland located at the base of the brain. Often called the 'master gland' because it controls other endocrine glands.
Picture your brain from the side - the pituitary sits right underneath, protected by a bony pocket in your skull called the sella turcica. It's perfectly positioned to receive signals from your brain and respond by releasing hormones that control growth, reproduction, and other glands.
Trap: Many students think the pituitary is inside the brain tissue. Actually, it hangs below the brain like a cherry on a stem, connected by the pituitary stalk.
3. The Neck Regulators - Thyroid and Adrenals
A butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck, wrapped around the front and sides of the trachea (windpipe).
Feel the front of your neck - the thyroid sits right there, hugging your windpipe like a bow tie. Its butterfly shape means it has two lobes connected by a bridge of tissue called the isthmus.
Two triangular glands that sit on top of each kidney, one on the left and one on the right side of the body.
The adrenals are your stress response headquarters. Picture your kidneys (about level with your lower ribs) - each adrenal gland sits on top like a cap. Their position near major blood vessels allows them to quickly flood your system with stress hormones when needed.
