Edexcel GCSE Physics mock draft, 26–31 Oct. Draft coverage: Physics Paper 1 (Higher tier). Reviewed for an original-practice sitting; check student availability before registering. Marking and results will follow later, after separate approval. Eligible new accounts receive a five-day Pro trial when signup email verification completes. Previous trials keep their original expiry. After expiry, new papers need Pro unless you have an explicitly confirmed free sitting offer for this event. That offer adds no Pro time or AI learning. Frequently asked questions

What is Topic 13: Electromagnetic induction?

Electromagnetic induction, transformers and the National Grid. 11 lessons in 3 subtopics.

What is the National Grid?

The National Grid is a system of cables and transformers linking power stations to consumers across the country. The National Grid Introduction notes cover this in full.

What is a transformer?

A transformer is a device that uses electromagnetic induction to change the voltage of an alternating current supply. The Introduction to Transformers notes cover this in full.

How does a loudspeaker work?

In a moving-coil loudspeaker, a varying current flows through a voice coil in the field of a permanent magnet. The Loudspeakers and Headphones: Converting Electricity to Sound notes cover this in full.

What is the generator effect?

The generator effect is when a potential difference is induced across a conductor that moves relative to a magnetic field, or when the magnetic field around it changes. The The Generator Effect notes cover this in full.

What is the transformer equation?

The transformer equation says primary voltage ÷ secondary voltage = turns on the primary coil ÷ turns on the secondary coil. The Voltage and Turns Ratio in Transformers notes cover this in full.

What is an alternator?

An alternator is an AC generator that rotates a coil in a magnetic field and uses slip rings, so the alternating current reaches the external circuit unchanged. The AC and DC Generators notes cover this in full.

How does a microphone work?

In a moving-coil microphone, sound waves make a diaphragm vibrate, and the attached coil moves back and forth in the field of a permanent magnet. The Microphones and the Generator Effect notes cover this in full.

How does a transformer work?

Alternating current in the primary coil creates a changing magnetic field in the iron core. The Introduction to Transformers notes cover this in full.
